Grey Blending

Embracing Your Grey Hair Colour

If you’ve been colouring your hair for years and are starting to think about embracing your natural grey, you don’t necessarily have to stop colouring your hair and let it grow out.

Grey blending is a more gradual approach, using carefully placed colour to soften the contrast between your existing colour and your natural grey, white or silver tones. The result can be a softer, more natural-looking transition without the obvious line of regrowth that can come with growing out an all-over colour.

At House of Colour, hair colour is a big part of what we do. Our approach to grey blending is always personalised to your starting point, your natural colouring, the condition of your hair and how much or how little grey you want to embrace.

If you have not had your hair coloured with us before or it has been at least six months since your last hair colour appointment, we ask that you visit us for a simple skin sensitivity test at least 48 hours before your hair colour appointment.

What is Grey Blending?

Grey blending is about softening the difference between your natural grey and your existing hair colour, rather than covering every grey hair.

If you currently have an all-over brunette, blonde, red or other permanent colour, simply allowing it to grow out can create a strong line between your natural roots and the coloured lengths. Grey blending gives us a way to gradually reduce that contrast.

The finished result can range from subtle grey blending, where your natural colour is still very much part of the look, through to a more noticeable salt and pepper effect with beautiful silver and white hues.

It’s not about achieving one particular shade. It’s about finding the right balance for your hair and how you want to look as your natural grey comes through.

How Grey Blending Works

There isn’t one technique that works for everyone. Your existing colour, percentage and pattern of grey, hair condition and desired result will all influence the approach.

Depending on your hair, we may use a combination of techniques such as:

* Highlights can introduce lighter pieces through the hair, helping to soften the contrast between darker existing colour and emerging grey.

* Lowlights can add depth and dimension where needed, particularly if you want to retain some of your natural-looking darker tones rather than becoming completely silver or white.

* Glossing and toning can help refine the overall colour, add shine and soften unwanted warmth while your natural grey develops.

Other colour techniques may also be considered as your hair changes. Your colour plan can evolve over time rather than being a one-off service.

Your Grey Blending Consultation

Grey blending isn’t just for naturally dark hair or a particular percentage of grey. Whether you have brunette, blonde, red or previously coloured hair, the starting point will be different. You may have a fairly even spread of grey, concentrated white areas around the hairline or a distinctive salt and pepper pattern. You may also have years of previous colour through the lengths.

That’s why the first step is understanding your individual hair history and what you want to achieve. A good grey transition starts with a thorough consultation.

We’ll look at your natural root colour, the amount and pattern of grey coming through, your existing colour and the condition of your hair. We’ll also talk about how much maintenance you’re comfortable with and whether you want to gradually embrace your natural grey or simply reduce the need for regular root colour.

If you have unwanted white hair or areas of grey that you don’t particularly want to emphasise, we can take this into account too. From there, we can explain the options available and create a realistic plan for your transition.

How Long Does Grey Blending Take?

Grey blending is usually a journey rather than a single appointment, particularly if you have a significant amount of existing colour through your hair. How quickly you can transition will depend on your starting colour, the amount of natural grey you have, previous colour history and the condition of your hair.

For some clients, the change can be relatively subtle from the first appointment. For others, it may take several salon visits to gradually lighten, soften and rebalance the existing colour.

We’ll talk you through what can realistically be achieved at your consultation, including how we can maintain your hair between appointments.

Can I Blend My Grey Without Going Completely Silver or White?

Yes. Grey blending doesn’t mean you have to become completely silver or white.

You may want to keep some of your natural root shade and simply soften the contrast between your grey and coloured hair. Highlights, lowlights and glossing can all be used to create dimension and help you find a balance that feels right for you.

For some clients, the aim is to gradually embrace their natural grey. For others, it’s simply about reducing the frequency of root colour and creating a softer regrowth. There is no single way to transition to grey.

Will Grey Hair Blending Damage My Hair?

Any hair colour service needs to take the condition of your hair into consideration, particularly when you have existing colour that needs to be lightened or changed.

We’ll assess your hair during your consultation and recommend an approach that takes its condition into account. Depending on what we’re doing, treatments may be recommended to help maintain the strength, condition and appearance of your hair.

Trying to achieve a major colour change in one appointment isn’t always the best option. A gradual approach can sometimes be the better way to protect the condition of your hair while still moving towards your desired result.

The best place to start is with a consultation. We can assess where you are now, talk through the options and create a colour plan that works for your hair, your lifestyle and the look you want to achieve.

How long does it take to transition to natural grey hair?

«

There’s no set timeframe. It depends on your existing colour, natural grey pattern, hair condition and how much of your previous colour needs to be changed. Many clients transition gradually over several appointments rather than trying to achieve everything in one visit.

Can I blend my grey hair without going completely silver, white or back to my natural root shade?

«

Yes. Grey blending can be tailored to create a softer transition while retaining some of your existing colour. Acombination of colouring techniques can be used to create dimension without making the whole head silver or white.

Will grey hair blending damage my hair?

«

The condition of your hair is an important part of planning your colour journey. If existing colour needs to be lightened, we’ll consider what your hair can realistically handle and may recommend a gradual approach and suitable treatments to help maintain its condition.

Is grey blending the same as covering grey hair?

«

No. Traditional grey coverage is generally designed to disguise or fully cover grey hair, whereas grey blending works with your natural grey to soften the contrast between grey and coloured hair. The aim is usually a more natural transition and less noticeable regrowth.

Can grey blending work with previously coloured hair?

«

Often, yes, but your previous colour history is important. Existing permanent colour, box dye, highlights and other colour services can all affect what is achievable. We’ll assess your hair during your consultation and explain the options before starting.

Will I need regular appointments during my grey transition?

«

You may still want regular salon visits while transitioning, but the frequency and type of colour service can change as more of your natural grey comes through. The aim for many clients is to gradually reduce the need for traditional root colour.
